FAQ

  • Hands-on treatment time will be kept to the maximum possible within each session.
  • The initial consultation forms an integral part of your massage treatment and is therefore included, not additional to, your appointment duration.
  • In order to deliver a safe and effective treatment, we ask that you disclose all relevant medical information, which we treat in strict confidence.
  • If you have a chronic medical condition or are receiving treatment from a specialist consultant, please speak to your healthcare provider before having a massage, as it may not be suitable for you.
  • Please arrive on time to relax and get ready
  • If you arrive late for your appointment, your session may have to be shorter whilst full payment will still be required.

Pregnancy massage at The Pregnancy Lab is safe and delivered by therapists with specialist pregnancy and postnatal training.

Most clients start from week 12 onwards. First trimester sessions may be offered following a screening call.

Women who have recently experienced bleeding, pre-term contractions, or have any of the following conditions should speak with their healthcare provider prior to receiving a massage:

  • High risk pregnancy
  • Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)
  • Preeclampsia
  • Previous pre-term labour
  • Experiencing severe swelling, high blood pressure, or sudden, severe headaches

Massage therapy does not induce labour. Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture and Reflexology might be able to help with baby positioning. Do consult your practitioner early in your pregnancy.

We are not Spinning Babies practitioners.

Frequency varies between clients. Some benefit from occasional sessions, others from regular care. We are happy to advise you, without pushy sales tactics.

You may start receiving post-natal massages as soon as you feel ready, or after 5-6 weeks if you have delivered by caesarean section.

This varies from person to person. Many clients continue with pregnancy-trained care well into the postnatal period, particularly if recovering from birth, feeding, or ongoing discomfort. When pregnancy-specific adaptations are no longer needed, we may recommend transitioning to remedial massage at our sister clinic, The Massage Lab.

Many mothers want to leave their baby in good hands and take a break. However, if you prefer or need to bring baby along, they are most welcome. Just remember – we are on the second floor, but you can leave your buggy on the ground floor and we will give you a hand!

We consider that the best and safest position for a pregnant woman during massage is side-lying. We make sure you are comfortably supported and propped up by strategically positioned award-winning BBHugM pillow and other props, pillows and blankets as needed.

Tables that provide a hole in which the uterus can fit may still apply pressure to the abdomen, or allow the abdomen to weigh down, causing uncomfortable stretching of the uterine ligaments.

No two bodies or pregnancies are the same, so there is never a one-size fits all solution.

Any position is safe, but may be adjusted for your comfort or specific treatment. Some moms crave being able to receive treatment face down again after lying on their sides for almost nine months. Others may be uncomfortable face down because of breast discomfort or the distraction of leaking milk.

The side-lying position is very comfortable and effective to treat specific issues of the shoulders, pelvis or legs.

We will make any adaptation needed to prioritise your comfort during your treatment.

Insurance cover varies, so please check with your provider first. If you are able to claim, we will issue a detailed invoice for you to submit to your insurer.
