Antenatal massage – effective support through pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of profound change: physically, emotionally and mentally. Alongside the excitement, it can also bring fatigue, tension, discomfort and moments of overwhelm. Antenatal massage offers a calm, supportive way to care for your body as it adapts throughout pregnancy.

Research suggests that massage during pregnancy can be deeply beneficial for wellbeing, particularly when it comes to helping you feel more relaxed, supported and at ease in your changing body.

RESTORING BALANCE AFTER BIRTH

Antenatal massage has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety and support emotional balance during pregnancy. Many people describe leaving a session feeling calmer, lighter and more grounded – especially valuable during a time of heightened emotions and anticipation.

Comfort for a changing body

As posture, weight and movement patterns change, it’s common to experience muscular tension and aches, particularly in the lower back, hips, neck and shoulders. Antenatal massage may help ease this physical discomfort by supporting tired, overloaded muscles and soft tissues.

Pregnancy Massage

Rest, relaxation and renewal

Massage encourages deep relaxation and can help you slow down and reconnect with your body. Research suggests it may also support better rest and reduce feelings of fatigue. While it won’t change the realities of pregnancy-related sleep disruption, many people find massage offers a meaningful sense of restoration.

Post-Natal Pregnancy Massage: helping your recovery

The weeks and months after birth can place significant physical and emotional demands on the body. Postnatal massage at The Pregnancy Lab is designed to support you through this transition with calm, thoughtful and individualised care.

Research suggests that massage during the postnatal period may offer a range of supportive benefits, particularly when used as part of wider postnatal care, like physiotherapy and pelvic floor health.

Supporting emotional wellbeing

Studies indicate that massage therapy may help reduce stress, anxiety and low mood in the postnatal period. Many people find that regular, supportive touch promotes relaxation and provides valuable time to rest and reset during a demanding stage of life.

Easing physical discomfort

Postnatal massage may help relieve muscular tension and soft-tissue discomfort commonly associated with pregnancy, birth, feeding and caring for a baby. This can include areas such as the back, neck, shoulders and hips, where increased load and postural strain are common. All carers are equally affected here, by the way!

Recovery for Body and Mind

Massage has been shown to support relaxation and may help improve sleep quality and reduce feelings of fatigue. While it isn’t a solution to disrupted sleep, many clients find it helps them feel calmer and more rested. It can also offer valuable time to pause, reconnect with your body, and feel supported during a demanding stage of recovery.

What to expect from your appointment

A pregnancy massage at The Pregnancy Lab is delivered by therapists with the highest level of qualification and professionalism  in specialist pregnancy and postnatal massage.

Every appointment begins with a brief check-in based on your pre-competed online Intake Form. This helps us better understand you, how you’re feeling on the day and how to tailor the treatment accordingly.

Massage is carried out in a side-lying position, supported by the award-winning  BBHugMe pillow and other props as needed for comfort and stability. We do not use massage tables with abdominal cut-outs. Pressure, techniques and positioning are adjusted throughout pregnancy and always adapted to ensure your safety and comfort.

Pregnancy massage appointments, either pre- or post-natal, are available as 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. Regardless of their duration, all treatments are adapted to support you wherever you are in your pregnancy or recovery journey.
